The concept may seem a bit strange to those who would do anything to induce customers to come to their doors, but Jay Scruggs has used knowledge and skill to succeed with a model that’s the envy of many groomers:
His customers pay membership fees for the privilege of scheduling appointments with him. Then they pay for the services he performs during those appointments, which probably makes him among the most sought-after members of the grooming profession.
How did all this come about? Almost by chance! A dozen years ago, Jay was building Here Comes the Groom into an exceptionally popular mobile grooming service. So exceptional was his popularity that he had fewer appointments available than he had calls for service, which led him to take reservations from those who were sufficiently interested to pay for the privilege of being on his waiting list.
Demand escalated from there and the “waiting list” became a membership list by default. There’s never been a time since when he’s had enough appointment time to satisfy all callers.
Jay has been grooming for 13 years. After winning a host of awards in the early 2000s, he turned his attention first to judging and became a sought-after judge and speaker in the U.S., Spain, Scotland, France, Italy and Canada. With those worlds fully conquered, he turned his efforts to helping groomers enhance their knowledge and skills through seminars and educational DVDs.
